In our pursuit of health and wellness goals, we often fall into the trap of believing that consistency is king. We set rigid exercise schedules, strict dietary plans, and unwavering routines, only to feel defeated when life inevitably disrupts our perfectly crafted systems. However, recent insights from behavioural psychology suggest that our focus on perfect consistency might be misguided.

Understanding Human Nature

The reality is that inconsistency is fundamentally human. Rather than viewing lapses in our health routines as failures, we need to recognise that variability is the norm, not the exception. This shift in perspective can be liberating and, more importantly, sustainable for long-term wellbeing.

Consider this striking statistic: only approximately 20% of gym members actually attend their gym regularly. This figure isn't a reflection of laziness or lack of motivation…it’s a reflection of human nature. Instead of striving for flawless adherence to our health goals, we should cultivate adaptability. Life will inevitably present challenges: holidays that disrupt our exercise routines, cold weather that makes outdoor activities less appealing, or busy periods that interfere with our meal planning.

The Art of Getting Back On Track

The most crucial skill in maintaining long-term health isn't avoiding setbacks; it's developing the ability to recover from them quickly. When we "fall off the wagon," the focus should be on how efficiently we can get back on, rather than how we can avoid falling off in the first place. This approach requires a fundamental shift in mindset. Instead of viewing interruptions to our routine as failures, we can reframe them as opportunities to practice resilience and flexibility. Each time we successfully return to our healthy habits after a break, we strengthen our capacity for long-term success.

Practical Applications

This philosophy can be applied across various aspects of health and wellness. Whether it's exercise, nutrition, sleep hygiene, or stress management, building in flexibility and expecting variability can lead to more sustainable outcomes. The goal becomes progress, not perfection, and the journey becomes more manageable and less fraught with self-criticism.
